Grandma's prayers

I wish I had a picture of my grandmother Duesterhoeft when she was laying on her kitchen couch praying.  This is embedded in my mind as a little girl and young girl.

I remember her as a quiet woman who scared me just a little.  She was a no-nosense lady who was firm but kind to me.  I knew that I needed to be good around her.  She always had candy in her kitchen cupboard that my cousins and I could partake of. But only allowed us to take one or two.( My cousin Randy and I found that out the time we tried to take a handful.) She scolded us for that. She was fairly old by the time I was born and couldn't get around too quickly.  She had long hair that she kept up in a bun.  I didn't even realize how long it was until one time I saw her outside at the pump, she was washing her hair and I think my mouth flew open when I saw her hair down.  I had no idea the length of it until then.  I remember my dad comforting her as she cried after my grandfather died.  I was only about 4 at the time.  All of these memories at a young age but none so powerful as my grandmother laying on her couch in the kitchen praying.

I have often times thought about her over the years and I wonder about all the prayers she prayed,  I am sure she prayed for her family.  I am thinking that she would be pleased to know her granddaughter Sharon, great granddaughters Sheila, Alisha and Emily, and great great grandchildren are serving the Lord Jesus Christ.  I wonder too if my walk with the Lord is due in part to what she might have prayed.  It encourages me to pray more fervently for people and situations.

I read this verse the other day in my devotional and immediately thought about my grandmother praying.  It says:

But you are always the same; you will live forever.  The children of your people will live in security.  Their children's children will thrive in your presence.  Psalm 102 : 27-28 New Living

What an encouragement that scripture is.  God's got our family for generations to come in His loving hands as we serve Him faithfully.  "Thanks Grandma, I'm thriving in God's presence.  I know your enjoying His presence in heaven. See you someday soon."

I don't have many pictures of my grandma D.  But this is one of her at my parents wedding.
